Overview

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Zuora offers customers the ability to import data from external sources, but we were being inundated with requests to fix the page and flow. It hadn’t been touched in a number of years and was somewhat archaic. It consisted of multiple pages that could fail due to the old server-side code and users would lose their place in the flow or dump your uploaded data entirely.

To add insult to injury customers wanted a way to use a templated structure with their data and apply it to any imported datasets.

The challenge

Deliver a simplified experience wherein the user would not lose progress or data and have a way to apply templates to the imported data.

Step-by-step

When examining the existing flows and synthesizing customer’s complaints there were a few simple things I could do at the outset: 1) provide a cleaner dashboard page with actions available and statuses clearly marked 2) create a stepped process to guide the user through any issues with the data 3) reinforce through page stability (engineering) that the customer wouldn’t lose their work.

By placing the flow into a dialog, we could offer dismiss interrupts as well as toast indicators to let users they’ll lose work if they leave the dialog and also know when data has been progressively saved in case they leave the page.

Additionally, we were able to afford the customers the ability to fix any data import errors in situ rather than having them be sent to yet another page to do this critical step of the process.
